OPINIONS WRITING PREVIEW
Should Dangerous Sports be Allowed
in Middle and High School?
Sports such as
football, wrestling, gymnastics, cheerleading, and some track and field events
are obviously dangerous sports but are beloved by the people who watch and are
played by. These sports are celebrated by many but are also frowned upon
because of their dangerous play factors to them.
Although these sports may be considered dangerous I believe they should
be able to be played by all, especially middle and high school students.
Football is a
sport played all around the world and is one of the most popular, beloved
sports of the United States. It is also one of the most dangerous sports that
consists of tackling and injuries. Football has major leagues such as the
NFL and the college league, theses leagues all begin with the young people.
These young students want to play this beloved sport without the worries
of injury who just wish to play.
Pole Vault is a unique sport with the
worst injuries. But as a pole vaulter I believe that it should be a sport that
anyone can try. This sport like any other sport brings people joy.
I don’t vault worrying about the risk of the sport or what could happen
while I’m in the air, I just jump.
Sports help students it doesn’t hurt students. Students with the passion
of a sport will most likely do anything to stay in the sport and to compete.
To compete in a sport the student must have passing grades and a high
attendance rate. Therefore, students will push themselves to stay on top of
things and work their hardest to stay in the sport.
If a sport is taken away from a child, the students will most likely
give up at school because they have nothing to work towards. Students want to
work to be the best at something, like sports. If they have nothing to work
towards and look forward to, students wont try hard to stay out of trouble, to
keep their grades up.
The sport I love most is Track and Field, I work for it and look forward
to the competition. Track and Field ended a couple of weeks ago and I have seen
a drop in my grades. I believe this is because now that I have all this time on
my hands, I procrastinate and don’t work hard to stay on top of things because
there is no meet or practice.
I know for a fact that I am not the only student that this is happening
to. We work for things and if it is gone, there is not really any push to be
better.
Sports bring kids and people of all age joy and excitement. Because they
have something they’re good at and have a passion for. Sports can be considered
a therapy, it gives people a thing to do and to love.
People of all age should have the chance to have a sport to love and be
passionate about. Therefore, I believe that all people including middle and
High school students should have the option to do sports.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH STORY
Guejuana Deblac, a freshmen at James Bowie High School, is this April's Student of the Month. Student of the Month is an award given to a role model student every month. She was given this award on Monday April 3, 2017. While getting the award Guejuana was overwhelmed with joy and gratefulness. Ms. Deblac believes she got this award for all her hard work and her good personality.
Today we interviewed Guejuana and asked her the different standards you have to have and why she was was the one to receive student of the month. "To get student of the month you must have good grades, conduct, stand up for others, and have a good heart" Guejuana explained. She also believes she earned this award because of her personality and her volunteer work. Guejuana is an involved person inside and outside of school. She loves to read, talk, and get involved with volunteer work. The most recent volunteering Guejuana has been involved in is the Austin Food Drive, "this was the main factor on why I won student of the month". Along with all her outside of school activities, like any other student Guejuana works extremely hard to keep her grades high. "I take pre-ap algebra, physics, biology2, animation, and art" these are only some of the classes that she takes and has good grades in.
Ms. Deblac is a well liked and a behaved student at Bowie, she is a great role model for other students and respects her parents and teachers. "I think I'm considered a good role model for both my school and family because I'm optimistic and like to make friends" Guejuana tells us. Because this award is not easy to get you must have supporters and something to work towards. Therefore we asked Guejuana what she was working towards, "I chose to work towards this accomplishment just to help the school be a better place and it looks good for college". We also questioned who her own role models and supporters are, "my mom because she is always smiling tells me to work hard and I look up to her, and my grandma because she is awesome".
Receiving the Student of the Month award is a big deal, so we decided to ask how Guejuana's school life has changed, "people I don't usually talk to come up to me and congratulate me, and I feel that there is now an even higher reputation to uphold now that I have won this award". "This award has changed me by making me work harder and to again keep my high reputation and I feel I have a role to play in the schools reputation too" she explains with some anxiety. But Guejana knows that she earned this award and it will help her in the future. "I plan to be a worship leader and an artist after college", Guejuana hopes that this award will help her get these careers. Guejuana has earned this award for being a hard working student and she knows that but she explains her feelings as she received the award itself, "I had lots and lots of surprise".
You receive student of the month at lunch, get an email, and an announcement over the loud speakers for the whole school to hear. So be on the look out for next month Student of the Month, and work for it. For more information on how to earn student of the month and for former Student of the Month precipitants look at jbhs.org.

NUT GRAF
Nut Graf is a term from the American English terminology of journalism. The Nut Graph is called the Nut Graf because the story should be summarized in a small nutshell, not too long and short. The Nut Graf is the most important aspect and the lead of a story. It explains to the reader what the author is going to write about and why the story is important. The Nut Graf may include other facts and should create a smooth transition to the rest of the story.
A good Nut Graf should contain the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, and HOW of a story. It should also have the most important facts stated so they can be elaborated on in the rest of the story. The Nut Graf will be at the beginning of a story and contain at least one to two sentences. But because this is only the beginning of the story in the Nut Graf the writer must remember not the tell the ending of the story so the reader will have to read the whole story to find out the ending.
